European Union Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Ian Sadek, has advised that maintaining a positive international reputation is very important in attracting tourists to the country.

Speaking at the Annual Tourism Thematic Conference 2024 held at Hotel Africana on Thursday, H.E. Ian Sadek said that a positive image of the country and ensuring it has a good reputation includes peace and proper management of health crises, such as COVID-19, Ebola, and M-Pox, among others.

“Uganda has now started to look at how its image is perceived in other parts of the world, beyond the tourist attractions themselves, wildlife, national parks, and lodges; this is important even for us in European countries,” he said.

Similarly, Amos Wekesa, a prominent investor in the tourism sector and founder of Great Lakes Safaris, noted that attracting tourists transforms the global perception of Uganda’s tourism. He cited the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon 2024 as a testament to the country’s growing tourism potential, drawing attention from international sports brands and major U.S. media outlets.

Another speaker at the event was Brigadier Felix Kulayigye, spokesperson for the UPDF, who explained the link between security and tourism for national development.

“Tourism and security should matter to any rational person,” he stated, highlighting the critical role security agencies play in bolstering the tourism industry. He assured that the UPDF is dedicated to ensuring the safety and freedom of movement for all visitors in Uganda.

With improved security, strategic investments, environmental conservation efforts, and peacebuilding initiatives, Uganda is set for sustained growth in tourism. Its natural beauty, rich culture, and favourable international image position it as a desirable destination for travellers. By 2022, Uganda experienced a remarkable 59% increase in tourist arrivals, welcoming 814,508 visitors.
