Uganda Cranes are now in pole position to secure a spot in the AFCON 2025 finals in Morocco after defeating South Sudan 1-2 this evening in a game played at Juba National Stadium.

The Uganda Cranes, who have missed out on the last two editions of the AFCON finals, started the game determined to secure all three points.

Paul Put’s charges got the opening goal through in-form striker Denis Omedi in the 15th minute; however, South Sudan equalized a few minutes later through Yohanna Paulino. The game remained even until the referee sent them to the halftime break.

After the break, both sides kept pushing for another goal until the 66th minute when Jude Ssemugabi nodded in Travis Mutyaba’s freekick, and the Cranes regained the lead.

South Sudan did not do enough to equalize again as the Cranes made better attacks, pushing for another goal to seal off the game. However, the score remained 1-2 in favor of the Cranes.

Uganda will now wait for the result of the South Africa-Congo game in Brazzaville, which starts at 7 p.m. A win for South Africa would mean that Uganda and South Africa secure the two spots from Group K to play in the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.

Nonetheless, Uganda still has two remaining fixtures next month against South Africa (home) and Congo (away) to complete the qualification campaign.
