Oliver Mbekeka is set to make history in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL) as the first woman to lead a men’s team as head coach.

Mbekeka, a former Uganda Crested Cranes forward, has been appointed head coach of Lugazi FC, a newly promoted UPL side. She takes over from Sadick Sempigi, marking a significant moment in Ugandan football.

In a statement, Lugazi FC expressed gratitude to Sempigi for his dedication and service: “We would like to express our gratitude to Sempigi for his tireless efforts and services during his time with us, and we wish him all the best in his future coaching endeavors.”

Mbekeka, who has been with the club since July 2016 as an assistant coach, is no stranger to the touchline.

Her experience spans multiple roles, having previously served as head coach for the Uganda U-20 women’s national team and Lady Doves FC.

Now, as she steps into the head coach position at Lugazi, expectations are high. The club’s chairman, Hajji Abdul Kawuulu, voiced his confidence in her leadership, saying, “Her appointment is very important for the club. We believe she will significantly enhance the team’s performance in the league.”

As a player, Mbekeka enjoyed an illustrious career, representing top women’s clubs across Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. She played for Kampala Women, City Stars, and She Corporate in Uganda, Source de Kivu and OCL City in DR Congo, and APR FC in Rwanda.

Internationally, she earned 12 caps for the Uganda national team, competing in the 2000 African Women’s Championship and the 2002 African Women’s Championship qualifiers.

Now, her challenge lies in turning Lugazi FC’s fortunes around in the UPL. After five matches, the team has struggled, managing only two points from draws against Vipers SC and Mbale Heroes, while suffering defeats to Maroons FC, UPDF FC, and Kitara FC.

Mbekeka’s first test as head coach comes today, as Lugazi FC faces Express FC at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

With her deep football knowledge and proven leadership, Oliver Mbekeka is on the verge of breaking barriers and proving that her expertise is just as formidable on the men’s side of the game. The football world will be watching closely as she takes this historic step.
