Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper and captain, Denis Onyango, has volunteered to support the Uganda Cranes CHAN squad goalkeepers while on holiday in Uganda.
Onyango, who led the Cranes at both the 2017 and 2019 AFCON finals in Gabon and Egypt respectively, will today be at Luzira Prison Grounds, where the provisional squad is already undertaking non-residential training preparations.
The squad has five goalkeepers, namely: Joel Mutakubwa (BUL FC), Hannington Ssebwalunyo (NEC FC), Crispas Kusiima (Kitara FC), Mutwalibu Mugolofa (KCCA FC), and Denis Kiggundu (Vipers SC).
Only three will make it to the final squad, which will represent Uganda at the tournament hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, kicking off on 2 August 2025.
Uganda is in Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea, and Niger. The Cranes’ first match is against Algeria and will be played at the newly refurbished Namboole Stadium on 4 August.
Uganda’s inability to progress beyond the group stage in previous editions remains a motivating factor for the team, especially with thousands of fans expected to rally behind them on home soil.
