The John Akii-Bua Olympic Memorial Stadium is steadily taking shape in Lira City, a project expected to spur regional growth, boost local economies, and inspire national pride. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the landmark facility is progressing rapidly.
The Shs470 billion, 20,000-seater stadium is being constructed by SAMCO National Construction Company, which commenced work in December 2024.

Named in honour of Uganda’s first Olympic gold medallist, John Akii-Bua, the project has already achieved major milestones. All earthworks are complete, with 872 reinforced piles successfully installed. Reinforced columns, footings, and pile testing have also been finalised, marking a critical stage in the construction process.

Currently, more than 30 subcontractors are actively involved in the works, underscoring the scale and complexity of the project.

The stadium is at the heart of a larger sports complex designed to meet international standards. Alongside the main arena with its 20,000 seats and an eight-lane track, the facility will include a 2,000-seat multi-sport indoor arena, a 25-metre semi-Olympic swimming pool, outdoor courts for basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton, as well as a parking facility with capacity for 1,000 vehicles.
Once completed, the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is expected to transform Lira into a centre for athletics and multi-sport activities, while preserving the legacy of John Akii-Bua—Uganda’s first Olympic champion.
