The State of Qatar has announced plans to open a resident embassy in Uganda.

The announcement came during a meeting at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Zwaidi, Qatar’s Ambassador-designate to Uganda, presented copies of his credentials to John Mulimba, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Affairs.

Ambassador-designate Al Zwaidi conveyed warm greetings from the Qatari government and expressed his country’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Uganda.

“It is an honour to be appointed the first Resident Ambassador to Uganda,” he said.

Until now, Qatar’s diplomatic mission to Uganda has been managed from Nairobi, Kenya, under a non-resident arrangement with multiple regional responsibilities.

Minister Mulimba welcomed the move, describing it as a milestone that will strengthen diplomatic, economic, and cultural relations. He commended Qatar’s growing engagement in Uganda’s development, noting the success of the 2nd Uganda–Qatar Business Forum held in October 2025, which focused on expanding trade and investment opportunities.

“Such initiatives are crucial in transforming diplomatic relations into tangible economic partnerships,” Mulimba noted.

Uganda already operates a resident embassy in Doha, and the establishment of Qatar’s mission in Kampala is expected to enhance coordination and foster new areas of collaboration.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, trade between the two countries has steadily increased over the past decade — with Uganda’s exports to Qatar rising from $20 million to $34 million, and Qatar’s exports to Uganda growing from $17 million to $26 million.

Mulimba expressed optimism about further cooperation in priority sectors such as agro-processing, tourism, manufacturing, minerals, oil and gas, and technology transfer in science and innovation.
