Uganda has unveiled the Made in Uganda Grand Trans-Africa Electric Expedition, an ambitious 30-day journey that will stretch more than 13,000 kilometres and cut across six countries: Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Eswatini and South Africa.
At the centre of the expedition is the Kayoola Electric Coach 13M (Model 2025), a long-distance electric bus built by Kiira Motors Corporation. The coach will be tested in real time across national borders, varied terrains and long stretches of highway. The expedition includes a team of three drivers and several mechanics.
During the launch, Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala stressed the importance of adopting modern transport solutions as cities evolve, noting that Uganda’s investment in mass transport reflects confidence in local innovation and Africa’s ability to shape its own sustainable future.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Monica Musenero echoed this message, describing the expedition as a clear demonstration of Africa’s potential to drive technological and industrial transformation when creativity and collaboration come together.
MTN Uganda’s General Manager for Enterprise Business, Ibrahim Senyonga, said the partnership aligns two forward-looking visions: one focused on green mobility and the other on green digital transformation. He explained that by powering the journey with advanced connectivity solutions, MTN is helping prove that e-mobility is not simply a modern luxury but a practical and necessary step in Africa’s fight against climate change.
