Raxio launches first data centre in Uganda worth Shs53b, internet to become cheaper and faster

Raxio has officially launched its first data centre in Uganda, a Tier III carrier-neutral data centre located at Namanve Industrial Business Park.

Raxio data centre will support industries that are facing increasingly complex and unique IT and regulatory challenges, by providing secure colocation space of up to 400 racks ready to house mission-critical IT infrastructure. It can provide 1.5MW of IT power.

Speaking during the launch yesterday, James Byaruhanga, general manager of Raxio Data Centre, said its a dream come true that phase one of the facility is complete and set to positively impact the economic development in Uganda.

 “Construction of our flagship facility has been a long but rewarding journey to this point that we are launching operations. Raxio will attract several opportunities for colocation regionally and internationally. We look forward to the positive impact of our facility across the enterprise, SME markets, financial services, content and media,” said Byaruhanga.

Byaruhanga also said that Raxio is hosting an instance of the Uganda Internet eXchange Point, which allows networks to directly interconnect and freely exchange data traffic at a common point in-country, making the internet cheaper, faster and more reliable.

Robert Mullins, CEO of Raxio Group, said $15 (about Shs53 billion) has been invested in the project anticipated to be strongly impactful.

 “The Raxio Group, supported by a strong institutional investor base, is on track to launch up to 12 carrier-neutral facilities across Africa within the next three years,” said Mullins.

He added; “We believe that by providing the right technological infrastructure needed to transform businesses, our data centres will help drive economic growth, social development and digital transformation throughout Africa.”
