113 scholars from the Equity Leadership Program have secured admission and scholarships to 71 top universities worldwide, spanning 22 countries. This prestigious cohort includes eight Ugandan scholars.
Dr. James Mwangi, Executive Chairman of Equity Group Foundation, officiated the airlift ceremony, commissioning the scholars to become agents of change.
“As you embark on this journey, remember to stay adaptable and embrace every challenge with integrity. Embrace the journey ahead, be open to different cultures and perspectives, and let your unique qualities shine. Build strong networks and innovate to create lasting solutions for your community. Invest in your ability to overcome challenges and find new approaches, as this will be your greatest asset,” he said.
The scholars have secured scholarships totaling $21.5 million for their four-year undergraduate studies. They will also receive an airlift token of Shs5.8 million to support their transition.
Dr. Mwangi highlighted the scholars’ crucial role in driving Africa’s socio-economic growth, particularly within the Africa Recovery and Resilience Plan (ARRP) framework. He encouraged them to establish networks, contribute innovative ideas, and give back through mentorship.
As the airlift ceremony commenced, Jackie Bakku, an ELP Scholar bound for European University Viadrina, shared her heartfelt journey. “I was once a refugee, living in Ayilo I Refugee Camp, but Equity’s support network transformed my life. Despite moments of self-doubt, their encouragement guided me through challenging times. Now, I’m headed to a world-class university to study International Business Administration – a dream I never thought possible.”
Jackie’s story is a testament to resilience, having overcome adversity to score 13 points at St. Mary’s Assumpta Girls School in Adjumani. Her journey was not alone, as fellow ELP Scholar Trevor Paul Egaru shared his own tale of triumph. “I emerged as the top boy in my district in 2022 and joined the Equity Leaders Program. During my internship at Equity Bank Kajansi Branch, I learned valuable skills. My advice to fellow scholars is to use our knowledge to uplift our communities and country.”
Trevor, hailing from Gulu, Northern Uganda, was joined by Francis Ocen, another ELP Scholar, who will study Poultry Science at the University of Georgia, USA. Francis reflected on the challenging application process, saying, “It required dedication and perseverance, but Equity’s staff pushed me to excel. I’m passionate about farming and aim to establish modern poultry farms in my community, making a meaningful difference.”
This year’s admissions bring the total number of scholars admitted to prestigious universities on fully funded scholarships to 970, including 13 joining Ivy League universities. The Equity Leadership Program has been instrumental in cultivating future leaders, with its first scholar now serving as Equity Group’s Chief Operating Officer.
