As Ugandans living abroad continue to send billions of shillings back home every year, Equity Bank Uganda is encouraging them to go beyond supporting their families by investing in businesses and projects that can generate long-term wealth.
To support this vision, the Bank will on Saturday, 1 August 2026, host another edition of its Equity Diaspora Webinar Series, a virtual platform designed to guide Ugandans abroad on how to make informed investment decisions back home.
The webinar will feature Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda, who will discuss how diaspora investment is becoming increasingly important in accelerating Uganda’s economic growth. Interested participants can register through http://shorturl.at/VKA8A.
The online session will focus on practical investment opportunities across key sectors of the economy, including commercial agriculture, manufacturing, real estate and small businesses. Participants will also receive expert guidance on financial planning, wealth creation and banking solutions tailored to the needs of Ugandans living overseas.
The event comes at a time when remittances are playing a bigger role in Uganda’s economy than ever before. In 2025, Ugandans abroad sent home a record US$2.5 billion (about Shs9.3 trillion), representing nearly 3.8 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
While much of this money continues to support families through school fees, medical care, housing and daily living expenses, Equity Bank believes it can also be channelled into productive investments that create jobs, expand businesses and contribute to national development.
Through its Diaspora Webinar Series, the Bank aims to equip participants with the knowledge, confidence and financial tools needed to transform remittances into sustainable investments. It also seeks to strengthen its role as a trusted financial partner for Ugandans abroad by offering digital banking services and personalised investment support that make it easier to manage assets from anywhere in the world.
The participation of the Bank of Uganda’s Deputy Governor highlights the growing national interest in unlocking diaspora capital as a key source of economic growth. Discussions are expected to explore how supportive government policies, financial innovation and secure digital banking can help attract more investment from Ugandans living overseas.
Equity Bank Uganda has continued to receive recognition for its work in diaspora banking. Earlier this year, it won the Corporate Business of the Year award at the African Business Chamber (AfBC) African Business Awards 2026 in London, in recognition of its contribution to financial inclusion, cross-border banking, trade facilitation and diaspora investment across Africa.
By bringing together financial experts, policymakers and members of the diaspora, the webinar is expected to encourage more Ugandans abroad to see remittances not only as a way of supporting their families but also as an opportunity to build businesses, create wealth and contribute to Uganda’s long-term economic transformation.
