PJ Powers, the legendary South African artiste jetted into Entebbe last evening ahead of the Jabulani Charity Concert slated for June 30 at the Kampala Serena Hotel, to benefit the work of local organisation, Girl Up Initiative Uganda.

Powers arrived a day after her mother passed away in South Africa, illustrating her commitment and relentless fight for the human rights of marginalised communities.

She is elated to be back in Uganda after her April visit saying: “I love your country and your people. I’ll always support Uganda and its people as Uganda has always supported me. I have received amazing loyalty and excitement from people here.”

The singer shared a special message for Uganda in light of her mother’s passing.
“Thank you for all the condolences and wishes that have been sent to me and all the love that I have received from Uganda with regards to the passing of my mother yesterday. I just want to rest assure everybody that the Jabulani Charity Concert at the Kampala Serena Hotel will most definitely take place. If my mother left me with one legacy, it was the legacy to never let people down. Therefore, I will be there to sing a song in her honor and party together with you. Thank you.”

PJ Powers, otherwise known as Thandeka, is known globally for her hit song “Jabulani” and her recently released a combo-single compilation with Uganda’s own Radio & Weasel, titled “Home to Africa”.

Powers is the global ambassador for Girl Up Initiative Uganda and hopes that charity concert can bring awareness to the issues girls face in Uganda and globally. She was most recently in Uganda in April this year to shoot the music video for “Home to Africa” (now live on Youtube) and understand the work and leadership of Girl Up Initiative Uganda.

She was inspired by the story of Girl Up’s Executive Director, Monica Nyiraguhabwa: “Monica totally inspires me. A beautiful young woman coming from the slums and then going on to study at a University in London shows the possibility of any person, no matter how dire their circumstances are, can turn their life around.”

PJ Powers will perform live with Radio & Weasel at the concert slated for Friday June 30 at the Kampala Serena Hotel. Tickets are 100K for regular, 300K for VIP and 5 million for a VIP table and are available at Shell Lugogo, Shell Bugolobi and the Kampala Serena Hotel.

Sponsors of the event include NTV, Plan International Uganda, Fenon Events, Coca Cola, Johnnie Walker, Sky Beach Lounge, Kampala Serena Hotel, and Mazuri.
