Ugandan movie “Tembele” has been selected by the Uganda Academy Selection Committee (UASC) to represent Uganda in the forthcoming 95th Oscars Awards due to take place in 2023.

According to the committee Chairman Godfrey Musinguzi, three movies were submitted but only one was deemed fit to represent the country.

Tembele is a feature film that zooms into the very soul of a man working on a garbage truck in the city as he battles with a mental setback after losing a son directed by Morris Herbert Mugisha.

Moriss Mugisha.

For starters, Moriss Mugisha is a Ugandan actor, director, photographer, model, and reality television star commonly known for representing Uganda in the third season of Big Brother Africa in 2008 and his debut directorial feature film Stain which received twelve (the most nominations) at the Uganda Film Festival Awards, winning five and also won an award at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2021.

Meanwhile, the selection of “Tembele” is only provisional pending the film’s fulfillment of all Academy eligibility criteria ahead of Oct 03, 2022, the Oscar submission deadline for all country entries.

If Tembele fulfills all eligibility criteria, it will become the very movie and the first time Uganda is officially submitting an entry to the prestigious awards since the launch of UASC in July 2019.
