Ugandan Hip Hop Awards 2024: Celebrating the Best of Hip-Hop Culture

The 2024 Ugandan Hip Hop Awards (UGHHA) delivered an electrifying evening of celebration, honouring the brightest stars and emerging talents within Uganda’s vibrant hip-hop scene. Held last Friday at Somewhere Else Bar and Restaurant (formerly Panamera), the event brought together artists, fans, and industry stakeholders to recognize outstanding achievements across various categories.

The ceremony saw a total of 21 accolades handed out, with both familiar icons and fresh faces taking center stage.

The Mith.

Among the night’s biggest winners was The Mith, who walked away with two prestigious awards—Lyricist of the Year for Conversations and Mixtape of the Year for Systeemu.

Another standout was the chart-topping anthem Parte Yani by Ruyonga, Zex Bilangilangi, and Wonder JR, which claimed both Song of the Year and Rap Fusion of the Year.

Rickman Manrick secured Album of the Year for Ndi Muto, a project lauded for its authenticity and lyrical depth, while DJ Jefas emerged victorious as Deejay of the Year. In the Inspirational Song category, Isabirye Mitch’s Mboniire featuring Kabera Angel, KekoTown, and Joses Arins Emanzi took top honours for its uplifting message.

Visual excellence was also celebrated, with Lagum the Rapper and Denesi’s Wacha Maneno earning the title of Video of the Year, while Trappex Booming was recognized as Producer of the Year for his role in shaping some of the year’s biggest hits.

The legendary Navio, a consistent force in Ugandan hip-hop, was crowned Male Rapper of the Year, reaffirming his dominance in the scene. Meanwhile, Ninja C stood out as the Female Rapper of the Year, celebrating the growing influence of women in the genre.

The UGHHA also shone a spotlight on rising stars and regional talent, ensuring recognition across Uganda’s diverse hip-hop landscape. Nsokwa claimed the coveted Rookie of the Year award for his breakout hit Where to Start, signaling a bright future ahead.

Regional categories saw victories for Ecee (More) as Northern Rapper of the Year, Saint Just (Jesus In My DNA) for the East, and KNK (Kamp Na Kevi) (Omukago) for the West.

In collaboration, Ecee and PsychoYP’s LEAN featuring Rhoma BTW and Zaylevelten took home Collaboration of the Year, further showcasing the genre’s ability to unite diverse voices.

The evening culminated with the Lifetime Achievement Award being presented to MC Yallah, recognizing her enduring contributions to Ugandan hip-hop.

Beyond artists, the event celebrated media and industry professionals driving the culture forward. NuveyLive, a dedicated platform for promoting Ugandan hip-hop, was named Media Personality of the Year.
