Nyaka, an organization combating sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the Kanungu district since 2015, hosted its annual Walk against SGBV.

The event commenced with the inauguration of Nyaka’s 5th Healing Center at Kebisoni Health Center IV in Rukungiri district. Led by Chief Walker, Mary Borgman, the PEPFAR Country Coordinator, participants embarked on a symbolic walk through Rukungiri town, displaying their commitment to raising awareness about SGBV.

Following the walk, a gathering was held at Rukungiri Stadium, where community leaders and experts addressed the attendees.

The event featured informative presentations and captivating performances from students and musicians, including Ykee Benda, Zamani, and MC Kachaina.

The main objective of Nyaka’s annual walk is to raise awareness, provide information about support services, and encourage community involvement in the prevention and reporting of SGBV.

Over the years, Nyaka has been at the forefront of supporting survivors of SGBV, aiding more than 600 individuals and securing the conviction of over 60 perpetrators. Collaborating closely with the community, they have conducted training and awareness-raising initiatives.

The impact of Nyaka’s efforts has been significant, with their message “Enough is Enough” reaching over 500,000 people. Hundreds of community members, including grandmothers, grandfathers, boda boda riders, and local professionals, have been trained as community champions against SGBV.

Sexual and gender-based violence continues to be a critical socio-economic issue in Uganda, with alarming statistics showcasing its devastating effects on individuals and communities.

According to the Annual Police Crime Report for 2020, 18,872 victims of domestic violence were recorded, including 3,408 male adults, 13,145 female adults, 1,133 male juveniles, and 1,186 female juveniles.

Nyaka’s Walk against SGBV plays a vital role in addressing this pressing concern and fostering a safer community for all.
