Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia, one of Uganda’s most respected entrepreneurs and philanthropists, was honored with the Distinguished Order of the Crested Crane (Grand Officer) by President Yoweri Museveni, during the 39th NRM/A Victory Day Anniversary celebrations on Sunday in Mubende District.

This prestigious award, conferred under the National Honours and Awards Act (2001, as Amended), recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to both public and private sectors through leadership and service.

In a moment of pride for the Ruparelia family, Dr. Ruparelia’s daughter, Sheena Ruparelia, was also recognized with a medal for her significant contributions.

A successful businesswoman in her own right, Sheena has been an integral part of the Ruparelia Group, playing a key role in its expansion and management.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ruparelia’s journey from humble beginnings to entrepreneurial success is a powerful story of resilience and visionary leadership.

Starting with modest capital, he founded the Ruparelia Group, a thriving conglomerate with interests in real estate, financial services, education, hospitality, agriculture, and media. Today, the Group has become a cornerstone of Uganda’s economy, providing employment to over 8,000 Ugandans and remaining one of the country’s top taxpayers.

Beyond his business ventures, Dr. Ruparelia is a committed philanthropist. As Chairman of the Ruparelia Foundation, he has spearheaded initiatives in healthcare, education, wildlife conservation, and poverty alleviation, donating over $1 million to various causes. His investments in education, including institutions such as Kampala International School and Kampala Parents’ School, have set a high standard for quality education in Uganda.

Dr. Ruparelia’s influence also extends beyond Uganda’s borders. Through his hospitality ventures, including Speke Resort Munyonyo, he has hosted major international events, such as the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2007 and the NAM and G77+ China Summits, further elevating Uganda’s global stature. These contributions were among the key reasons for his recent recognition.

This is not the first time Dr. Ruparelia’s remarkable contributions have been acknowledged. He has previously received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Uganda Pentecostal University and the Golden Jubilee Independence Medal for his outstanding investment services.
