By the time the first glasses were raised at Mezo Noir last Monday, during its ‘Useless Mondays’ night, it was clear this was no ordinary evening. The room glowed with anticipation, soft lights bouncing off polished surfaces, as the city’s most stylish crowd leaned into the night. The music played gently at first, with a blend of Amapiano rhythms and electronic undertones, but something else was building beneath it all. This was not just a party. It was a shift in how Kampala experiences tequila, one refined sip at a time.
What drew many may have been DJ Dash’s birthday, but what unfolded later was far more enduring. Known for his commanding presence on NTV’s- The Beat and his electric sets across Kampala’s nightlife circuit, DJ Dash carries a magnetic energy that naturally draws people to him. That same charisma made him the perfect celebrant for a night that demanded both style and substance.
As guests started walking in at 7pm, elegance set the tone. Every table filled quickly, every corner alive with conversation, every detail curated to feel intentional. The beginning of the week timing faded into irrelevance as the venue took on the pulse of a typical Friday or Saturday night.
The true transformation of the evening sat at the Don’s Table, an experience that quietly became the soul of the night. Here, groups of 3 gathered to slow down and truly discover tequila as a premium spirit. Guided by Uganda Breweries Ltd (UBL) Reserve Brand Ambassador- Melanie Kaita, each session unfolded like a conversation between palate and spirit. Guests leaned in, curious at first, then fully engaged as the layers of Don Julio began to reveal themselves.
The journey opened with Don Julio Blanco. Crisp and luminous, it carried bright Agave notes lifted by citrus, finishing clean and refreshing. It was the kind of introduction that awakened the senses instantly. Then came the Reposado, softer and more rounded, its time in oak bringing forward whispers of caramel, vanilla and gentle spice. It lingered just long enough to invite a second sip. Finally, the Añejo arrived, rich and contemplative. Deep toasted agave, warm oak and a smooth, lingering finish created a moment that demanded attention. It was not just tasted, but also experienced.
Kaita guided each guest with warmth and precision, reframing everything many thought they knew about tequila. She explained that tequila is not confined to hurried shots and predictable rituals. “It can be sipped slowly, appreciated like a fine whisky, or explored through thoughtfully crafted cocktails,” she said. Each expression, she further noted, carries its own moment. Blanco for vibrancy, Reposado for balance, Añejo for depth and connection.

Around the table, reactions shifted from surprise to delight. Conversations grew animated as guests compared notes and shared discoveries. Some admitted they had never tasted tequila this way before. Others were already deciding which bottle would define their next celebration, and thus what started as curiosity became preference.
Complementing these moments of discovery, Reserve Mixologist Jane Apio brought yet another appealing dimension to the experience. For early guests, she crafted a selection of cocktails that showcased the spirit’s versatility. The classic Margarita arrived bright and refreshing, Don Paloma offered a crisp, citrus driven profile, while the Tequila Sunrise delivered both visual beauty and smooth flavor. Each cocktail reinforced the idea that the Don Julio core range is about giving distinct experience, since each is tailored for a different moment.
Meanwhile, the energy on the main floor continued to rise with a back-to-back affair as DJs took to the decks in pairs. The duos included; City Girl and DJ Ames, Edwizzy and DJ Mato, the Wav Bros did their thing together, as well as the main celebrant,- DJ Dash, who teamed with Don Julio influencer- Dj Spinny. Sheilah Gashumba aka DJ Lil Stunner, the Don Julio ambassador for the 1942 range, was the surprise of the night, since she wasn’t on the lineup.
Then came the unmistakable highlight. Bottles of Don Julio 1942 made their entrance, greeted and ushered by the now iconic Dorime soundtrack, waving excitement that rippled across the venue. Phones lifted, glasses raised, and every other moment the entire room moved as one. It was theatre, celebration and aspiration all at once.
However, even with that spectacle, the most lasting impact remained those quieter, intimate moments of discovery. The laughter shared over a perfectly balanced Reposado. The pause that followed a sip of Añejo. The realization that tequila, when experienced this way, becomes something far more meaningful.
As dawn approached and guests stepped out into the early morning air, they carried more than memories of a great night. They carried new preferences, new rituals and a new appreciation for what tequila can be.
The evening had shifted perception, turning Don Julio from a familiar name into a personal choice.
