Christmas is just around the corner, and for many, that means packing bags and heading to the village to celebrate the festive season. While the budget might dictate this annual migration, it’s essential to be mindful of certain behaviours to ensure a harmonious and enjoyable visit for all.

Here are some guidelines to consider during your village Christmas celebration:

Capture the Essence: While on the road to the village, don’t forget to take some selfies. But here’s the catch – make sure to include the surroundings that speak of your roots and the elders (jajja). Share the beauty of your journey and the essence of the village.

Respectful Church Behavior: If attending church services, refrain from being on social media. Stay engaged in the spiritual atmosphere without causing distractions.

Language Matters: When communicating, be mindful of your language. Avoid the temptation to speak a mixture of English and your mother tongue, especially when addressing the elderly. Show respect for tradition and cultural values.

Local Pub Etiquette: While socializing at local pubs, be conscious of the drink requests. Opt for local options rather than requesting high-end brands like Ciroc, Jameson, Johnnie Walker, or Singleton. Embrace the local brews for a more authentic experience.

Adapt to Local Dining Customs: During meals, try to adapt to local dining customs. Avoid asking for a fork and knife if it’s not the local practice. Embrace the traditional way of enjoying your meals.

Balanced Shopping: When returning to the city, find a balance in your shopping. It’s unnecessary to carry everything from the village farm. Consider what is practical and essential, avoiding excess baggage.

Bathroom Visits: When it comes to using the facilities, be independent. Avoid unnecessary requests to be escorted to the toilet with a torch. Trust your instincts and navigate the surroundings confidently.

Appreciate Natural Resources: Instead of looking for a swimming pool, appreciate the natural resources around. Many villages have overflowing ponds that offer a refreshing and natural swimming experience.

Inclusive Socializing: Embrace the diversity of the village community. Avoid only associating with other “bana-Kampala” (city dwellers). Engage with everyone and appreciate the richness of village life.

By following these guidelines, you can make the most of your Christmas village experience, fostering a respectful and enjoyable celebration for all involved.
