Several seasoned legislators failed to retain their seats in the 2026 parliamentary elections, marking the end of lengthy political careers for some prominent figures.

Former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Democratic Front (DF) president Mathias Mpuuga lost the Nyendo–Mukungwe parliamentary race to National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Gyaviira Sebina Lubowa. Mpuuga had represented the constituency since 2011.

In Kira Municipality, NUP’s George Musisi defeated veteran opposition politician Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who had held the seat for about 15 years.

Patrick Kuteesa of the NUP also registered a major win in Kimanya–Kabonera after defeating Abed Bwanika. Bwanika, a former presidential candidate, had served one term in Parliament.

In Busiro East, senior lawyer Medard Ssegona lost his seat to Emmanuel Magoola, an independent candidate aligned with the NUP. Ssegona had contested as an independent after failing to secure the NUP ticket and was seeking a fourth term in Parliament.

Theodore Ssekikubo, who had served in Parliament for 25 years, was voted out by retired Major General Emmanuel Rwashande. Veteran legislator Abdu Katuntu, first elected in 2001, also lost his Bugweri County seat.

Meanwhile, Muwanga Kivumbi was defeated in Butambala as he attempted to extend his parliamentary career to two decades.

Asuman Basalirwa, who first entered Parliament in 2018 after winning a by-election on the Justice Forum (JEEMA) ticket, was defeated in the Bugiri Municipality race.

In Buyaga West County, Kagadi District, long-serving legislator Barnabas Tinkasimire lost the parliamentary contest to Dennis Namara.

Tinkasimire had been a Member of Parliament since 2006.
