Erectile Dysfunction is one of the most common Urological diagnoses affecting patients visiting Urology clinic at UMC Victoria Hospital.52% of men in the age range 50-70 years suffer from erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction (impotence) is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sex.

Having erection trouble from time to time isn’t necessarily a cause for concern. If erectile dysfunction is an ongoing issue, however, it can cause stress, affect your self-confidence and contribute to relationship problems. Problems getting or keeping an erection can also be a sign of an underlying health condition that needs treatment and a risk factor for heart disease.

If you’re concerned about erectile dysfunction, come consult with the Urologist — even if you’re embarrassed. Sometimes, treating an underlying condition is enough to reverse erectile dysfunction. In other cases, medications or other direct treatments might be needed.

Symptoms

Erectile dysfunction symptoms might include persistent:

  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Trouble keeping an erection
  • Reduced sexual desire

Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosis

When you see a doctor for ED symptoms, they’ll try to find out whether you have another health condition that could cause the problem. They’ll ask about your medical history, including questions about your sex life. You might have:

  • Urologist. It will include an examination of your penis and testicles.
  • Blood and pee tests. These check for problems like diabetes, heart disease, and low testosterone.
  • A mental health exam. This can reveal whether you have stress, depression, or other issues that could lead to ED.
  • An ultrasound. This allows your doctor to see whether blood flow problems are affecting your penis.

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if:

  • You have concerns about your erections or you’re experiencing other sexual problems such as premature or delayed ejaculation
  • You have diabetes, heart disease or another known health condition that might be linked to erectile dysfunction
  • You have other symptoms along with erectile dysfunction

Things you can do to help with erectile dysfunction

Healthy lifestyle changes can sometimes help with erectile dysfunction.

Do

  • Manage weight
  • Stop smoking
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Exercise daily
  • Manage stress and anxiety

Don’t

  • Manage your alcohol consumption
  • Manage your fitness actives (cycling) with guidance of a fitness trainer
  • Health advice: See a Doctor if erection problems keep occurring. It might be a sign of a Medical condition that can be treated.

If you have any of the above-mentioned symptoms, consult with our Specialist Urologist, Dr. Ahmed A. E. for free this February.
