In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a highly advanced medical procedure designed to help individuals and couples realize their dream of parenthood. During IVF, eggs and sperm are combined in a specialized laboratory setting to create embryos. These embryos are then carefully transferred into the woman’s uterus with the goal of achieving a successful pregnancy.

IVF is commonly recommended in cases such as blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, male infertility (low sperm count or motility issues), endometriosis, unexplained infertility, and for same-sex couples or single individuals wishing to have children.

The IVF process involves several well-coordinated steps. First, ovarian stimulation is carried out using hormonal medications to encourage the production of multiple eggs. This is followed by egg retrieval, a minimally invasive procedure used to collect eggs from the ovaries. Fertilization is then performed, where the eggs are combined with sperm in the laboratory. In certain cases, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is employed, where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. Fertilized eggs are subsequently monitored during the embryo culture stage to ensure optimal development. Finally, one or more healthy embryos are carefully transferred into the woman’s uterus during the embryo transfer stage.

The success of IVF depends on various factors, including age, the cause of infertility, and the quality of eggs, sperm, and embryos. Although IVF can be physically, emotionally, and financially demanding, it offers hope to many individuals and couples aspiring to have children.

UMC Victoria Hospital is one of the medical facilities in Uganda that provides this service. The hospital is committed to maximizing IVF success rates by combining cutting-edge technology, expert knowledge, and compassionate care.
