Can you share a bit about yourself and how you got started in the modelling industry?
My name is Nalubega Aysha, and I hold a degree in Business Administration and Human Resource Management. I entered the modelling industry when a friend who owned a modelling school scouted me and suggested I enrol in a modelling course. I completed a six-month course at THE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF MODELING, where I honed my skills in the modelling career.
What inspired you to pursue a career in modelling?
My inspiration stems from the childhood love I had for it. As a child, I avidly read fashion magazines and admired how models posed for pictures and looked stunning in various outfits. The glamour of celebrities was particularly inspiring.
Could you describe your most memorable modelling experience so far?
My most memorable modelling experience was at THE BATA FASHION WEEKEND. This international show, live in Prague, showcased Bata shoes and products from various countries. It felt like participating in the New York Fashion Show.
What challenges have you faced in the modelling industry, and how did you overcome them?
The primary challenges revolved around exploitation, especially concerning inadequate compensation for commercial shoots. I overcame them by understanding my worth as a model and being discerning about the projects I undertook.
Can you share a moment in your career that you consider a significant achievement or breakthrough?
Honestly, I haven’t identified a particular moment as a significant achievement or breakthrough. While I’ve walked shows and participated in big platforms, I don’t label any as a defining milestone.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a successful model?
I recommend attending a modelling school and avoiding desperation for fame. Thirst for fame can lead to exploitation and undesirable experiences. Knowing your worth is crucial.
How do you juggle being a model and a florist?
Modelling is currently a hobby, not a primary income source. I pursue commercial jobs that align with my schedule as a florist. Running an online floral business allows for flexibility, and my love for nature inspires both pursuits.
Where do you draw inspiration for your floral designs?
My floral business operates under The Imperfect Art, focusing on selling concrete flower pots, painted clay pots, herbs and spices, landscaping, and compound designing. My inspiration comes from my love for nature, viewing plants as children.
How much was your starting capital, and how did you raise it?
My initial capital came from savings accumulated during my front desk job at Fairway Hotel, a position I held before being laid off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Can you share a project or event where your floral designs played a significant role?
While I don’t have a specific project, the ultimate satisfaction comes from client feedback expressing happiness with how my unique and beautiful floral designs have enhanced their homes and offices.
How do you adjust your designs based on the seasons?
I don’t tailor my designs to specific seasons. The Imperfect Art embraces an all-season approach, as plants are perennial, and so are my concrete artworks.
As a florist, how do you stay updated on the latest floral design trends?
I stay informed through the internet. Just like fashion, floral designs evolve, and staying updated on trends is essential to providing clients with fresh and modern designs.
What advice would you give to someone starting their own floral business?
Be patient and enter the business with a genuine love for plants or nature. Embrace the fact that there will be challenging months and days, but passion and love for what you do will help you successfully navigate through difficult times. Additionally, understanding different plants and their reactions to weather conditions is crucial, so consider taking a course in botany if possible.
