Police in South Africa have launched a manhunt for a Ugandan man who allegedly conned a policewoman attached to the South African Police Service (SAPS) out of nearly R3 million (about Shs614 million) by pretending to be her boyfriend.

The suspect, who calls himself “Dr. Kalvin Sofika” is said to have gained the officer’s trust and convinced her to take out loans.

According to police reports in South Africa, the suspect, in his 30s, and the 53-year-old police captain met at a shopping complex in Rustenburg in September 2023.

The suspect presented himself as a medical doctor and quickly developed a romantic relationship with the officer, leading to the exchange of contact details and subsequent dating.

As the relationship progressed, the suspect allegedly persuaded the officer to take out loans and withdraw her pension before advising her to resign from her police job.

Furthermore, the suspect took her to a traditional healer who confirmed that she needed to resign to start making a lot of money. The officer resigned at the end of November last year.

The suspect disappeared from her earlier this year without paying the loans she had taken out on his behalf. She reported the case to the police, who have since launched a manhunt.
