COVID-19 takes its toll on Ugandan’s pockets: Households are spending 30% less – Report

sudhir2[dropcap]H[/dropcap]e is a billionaire in dollar terms, so a $1m (Shs3.3bn) is pocket change. We were shocked, but not surprised when Sudhir Ruparelia donated $1m towards the construction of the ruling party NRM’s Movement House.

President Yoweri Museveni hosted two fundraising dinners at State House Entebbe, on Thursday and Friday raising Shs16bn from businessmen and NRM cadres.

Sudhir singlehandedly forked out 20 per cent of the entire collections.

Those who came close to Sudhir were King Caesar Mulenga of Caesar Development Kingdom and one Taban of K.K Coaches who donated Shs500m each. MTN’s Charles Mbiire donated Shs300m while young tycoon Ham Kiggundu donated Shs200m.

The Movement House will be constructed behind Crested Towers and it will have 27 storeys, to symbolise the 27 fighters who took to the bush in 1981 to wage the five-year war that led to Museveni’s coming to power in 1986.

President Yoweri Museveni will be celebrating 30 years in power in Janaury next year and is widely expected to win another five year term in office come the Presidential elections in March next year.
