Dr. Stella Nyanzi faces up to two years behind bars after Ethics Minister Lokodo orders for her arrest over stripping

Following her naked-protests, Makerere University researcher Dr. Stella Nyanzi faces up to two years in jail if found guilty of contravening the anti-pornography act.


According to state owned New Vision, Ethics and integrity state minister Simon Lokodo has ordered police to arrest Nyanzi for stripping.

Dr. Nyanzi who works at Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), stripped and shared nude pictures on Facebook page protesting the closure of her office by her boss Prof. Mahmood Mamdani.

Nyanzi refused to take part in MISR’s Phd teaching programme, saying that it was not part of her contract, since the programme was developed after she had been employed by the university and Mamdani decided to throw her out of office, a move she protested by stripping naked.

“I have thrown my clothes outside Prof. Mamdani’s office. I am naked as I cry out for my office,” she posted on her Facebook wall,” Nyanzi made the post that went viral this Monday morning.

Lokodo said that Nyanzi went overboard. “Even if she was offended by anybody, she behaved indecently. I condemn it in the strongest words possible and I have directed police to arrest her. She must be brought to book,” the minister said.

Lokodo adds that Dr. Nyanzi will be charged under the Anti-Pornography Act. If court finds her guilty of the offence, she will get a two-year jail sentence or a fine of 500 currency points or both.
