besigye-.,...News reaching us is that former FDC chief and four-time presidential aspirant, Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye is undergoing interrogation for his role in the recent attacks at Gulu barracks –which attacks intelligence officials have said were part of a larger scheme to overthrow the government through a military coup.

“Our investigations so far reveal that Dr. Besigye was part of the larger scheme to forcefully overthrow the democratically-elected government of Uganda, by getting armed forces officers to co-operate with civilian protestors in subversive activities,” a highly-placed military intelligence officer who prefers anonymity told Matooke Republci earlier today.

“The plan was to have military officers allow protestors access to the armories of different barracks, such as Bombo, Entebbe, Makindye and Mbuya,  so they could have weapons to fight the security forces, which security would also have been divided with a good chunk supporting the coup,” the intelligence officer added.  “Arrested Entebbe Airbase Garrison Commander, Col Dan Odwee Opito was in the same plot.

“Certainly we are going to add the people we have arrested in this coup plot to the list of witnesses against Dr. Besigye in his ongoing treason charge.”

The attack on Gulu Central Police Station Barracks occurred yesterday evening at about 8.30pm, and it was the second invasion of a state armed forces barracks in two days, following the attack at Opit Military Detach a day earlier. While government said its forces had successfully repulsed both attacks and made security reinforcements across the Northern region, a shadowy rebel movement calling itself the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) claimed responsibility for both attacks.
