Government extends deadline for simcard registration to May 19th

Government has extended the deadline for simcard registration using National ID’s to May 19th. Uganda Communications Commission had given eight days ultimatum to re-register simcards with their service providers.

Prime minister Ruhakana Rugunda confirmed the move while addressing the press this afternoon.

In a letter to the Executive Director UCC, Godfrey Mutabaazi, The Prime Minister does not provide the grounds on which the decision was made to extend the deadline to May 19th.

The Premier yesterday, met with top leadership of the commission at his office in a closed door meeting which was also attended by Information and ICT Minister Frank Tumwebaze.
