Twenty men and women from Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia were arrested in Bangkok this Friday morning on suspicion of selling illegal drugs.

Thai newspaper The Nation reported that immigration, drug squad and Makkasan district police raided the I House condominium on Rama IX Road at 9am and made the arrests.

“Immigration Police Bureau Commissioner Lt Gen Natthaporn Praosunthorn said an Ethiopian was the leader of what he described as a drug-peddling gang,” the paper reported.

Natthaporn said an undercover police officer had determined that the group was selling drugs.

Another group of 20 people from African countries had earlier been arrested in Bangkok on the same charge, he noted.

He said the Immigration Bureau, which has a policy of “Good guys in, bad guys out”, would accelerate its crackdown on foreign criminals.

Some Ugandans in Thailand are involved in prostitution and drug peddling.
