Clad in all yellow attire, former presidential aspirant now Minister for Kampala, Beti Kamya has called upon Ugandans to “come out and be wise” and push for amendment of the presidential age limit.

“Ugandans should be wise and push for constitutional amendment so that as long as God has given President Museveni strength to lead this country, he should continue…”, she told NTV in an interview.

She described the president as a God-given gift with excellent leadership that Uganda does not deserve to miss out on. Kamya, however, has not always held these views on Museveni. In 2001 and 2006 she was one of the most vocal supporters of Museveni’s long-time challenger Dr Kizza Besigye, before taking on the two men herself by contesting in the 2011 presidential race.

In the February 2016 elections she backed former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi but ended up joining Museveni’s government three months later as minister. Article 102(b) of the Constitution prohibits anyone above 75 years from contesting for presidency (Museveni will be 76 in four years’ time), but it appears Kamya is not ready to find a new presidential candidate to support in 2021.
