Students who like taking part in strikes and hooliganism acts at Uganda’s oldest and largest institution of higher learning may soon rethink their conduct after the vice chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe today announced a new strategy to curb the vice.

Nawangwe, while speaking at the first vice chancellor monthly press briefing today evening at the university’s main hall, said they have established a disciplinary committee that will be strictly headed by a judge to deal with such cases.

“The dean of students may refer a case of breach of the university regulations to the university students disciplinary committee without the same having been brought before hall disciplinary committee,” Nawangwe announced.

The other members on the committee will be two representatives of academic staff, a senior member of administrative staff, and a member from the public.

He said that this disciplinary committee is already in place and will be officially inaugurated by university council chairperson Dr Charles Wana-Etyem on November 1.

Asked why there were no students on the committee, Nawangwe said such leaders can risk being assaulted by students if the committee ever take a harsh decision.

Among the other functions of the Committee include reprimanding the student, suspending the student for a specified time, asking the student to be a non-resident, and recommending to the university council that a student gets dismissed.

Previously, students with indiscipline cases would appear before a disciplinary committee that would be headed by any member of public.

Students have not yet given their views about the development.
