The spokesperson of Uganda prisons Frank Baine has this morning decried prosecutors’ strike, saying that it has led to over congestion in prisons.

“The prisons are supposed to accomodate 20,000 inmates but currently we have 53,000… this is way too much,” Baine said.

According to Baine, they have 10000 people who are supposed to have been tried in court, but have since remained in prison.

While admitting that justice delayed is justice denied, Baine noted that eveyday, 1500 inmates ought to be tried in court but due to the strike, there is a halt to this.

Baine added that as a result of having all these inmates, they are running out of food to feed them.

Prosecutors went on strike about six weeks ago demanding for salary increment and have since engaged with government in endless and fruitless negotiations.
