Following over a two-week-long nationwide strike, Uganda Medical Association and government have reached an agreement.  In the reported agreement, a doctor who was currently at Shs1.3million will be increased to Shs5million in the coming financial year and the working conditions will be improved.

“Doctors have assured us that the strike is going to be called off on Wednesday. There is finally a relative common ground materializing,” government source stated.

However, in a press release issued by the UMA President Okwaro Obuku it stated that government must put in writing all what they have agreed upon. “The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister is to write a letter of commitment on the government response to our requests. The UMA NEC will then convene a General Assembly to communicate these government commitments,” part of Dr. Obuku’s statement read.

Originally the association wanted the government to increase doctor’s salary to Shs48m and also increase their duty allowances review the supply chain and management of medicines, vaccines and medical supplies.
