Ahead of the launch of the four lane Kampala -Entebbe Expressway, we have been reliably informed that the 49.5Km stretch will be accessible at a fee.

According to UNRA, the money collected from the use of the expressway will be used to pay back the loans used in its construction. The construction of the expressway started in 2012 with funding from China’s Exim Bank at a tune of nearly Shs1.2t. The debt is expected to be paid back in a period of 20 years from launch date.

“This money should not be looked at as an additional tax…the government will come in and subsidise if it is not enough. The expectation is Shs70 per Kilometre”, Patrick Muleme, head of designs UNRA stated.

For the 49.5Km road at a rate of Shs70Km, that brings the charge to Shs3,465 which is approximated to Shs3,500. At the moment, UNRA is planning to take over the management of the toll road as a pilot with toll set along Busega to Mpala area at Shs2000.

The expressway is expected to be launched in May this year.
