Yesterday, Zimbabweans went to the polls in the first post  Robert Mugabe election after 40years and according to the nation’s electoral commission, about 70% of registered voters cast their ballot.

The main contest is between incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa and leading opposition leader 40-year-old Nelson Chamisa of Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change, or MDC.

After casting his vote, opposition leader Chamisa seemed confident as he claimed ready to take on the highest position in Zimbabwe.

“I’m sure we are winning resoundingly. We now have results from the majority of the over 10 000 polling stations. We’ve done exceedingly well” Chamisa said before adding that; “Awaiting ZEC to perform their constitutional duty to officially announce the people’s election results and we are ready to form the next government.”

Since the law governing their elections orders for release of the results within five days, official announcements of the 2018 general election are expected by Saturday, August 4.
