Mid last month, wife to Prof Gilbert Bukenya, Dr Margaret Mary Musoke, filed for divorce in High Court at Makindye where she accused the former vice president of abandoning his marital obligations, deserting their matrimonial home and also engaging in several incidents of adultery and infidelity.

Going within the stated 15 days ultimatum, Bukenya has also filed his defence in response to the wife’s suit. In his defence, Prof Bukenya admitted to having other sexual relationships saying their separation was enough to allow him engage in new relations since he never chose to become a celibate.

However, he asked court not to award any of his property to Margaret because she contributed nothing to their development. The Ex-VP says he already offered the wife her share of the property.

“The petitioner did not contribute anything to the purchase and development of land in Garuga, Katomi as the same property is the property of the respondent’s friend, Bill Bertrand he has had for 40 years through his profession as a medical doctor. The respondent’s contribution and ownership is minimal,” Prof Bukenya’s response dated May 28 reads in part.

Prof Bukenya also states that the wife has had a successful medical career which has got her lots of property.

“The respondent (Bukenya) knows that the petitioner has a commercial building in Gayaza town and other properties she shared from her parents, among others. The respondent is a retired pensioner who would also wish to have a share in the petitioner’s properties to which he contributed but will not burden his wife who is also a pensioner [and needs to use her properties],” Prof Bukenya states.

Prof Bukenya also mentioned other projects where he alleged that Margaret had no vital hand in them. These include; a plot and building in Kakiri Town Council which he currently rented out to Post Bank and the other houses Francisa Clinic. He says it’s only late Stella Njuba who helped him develop them and it’s no surprise that the children of the late Njuba are enjoying the benefits.

He alleges that another property in Kakiri, which houses Francisca Clinic, was also jointly purchased and developed by the late Njuba.
