MV Sigulu ferry has today made what is called “FLOTATION” ahead of its maiden trip in the waters of Lake Victoria.

The ferry has been under construction for seven months at Masese landing site in Jinja. The ferry is now the 5th addition to the Ugandan fleet, and is going to serve as a connection between Namayingo Mainland and the islands of Sigulu and Lolwe.

According to information from Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), MV Sigulu is Uganda’s largest ferry to date, with the capacity to carry 300 passengers and a load of over 200 tonnes.

Other facilities on the new ferry include a medical room, a bathroom, toilets, and a VIP lounge for those that want more convenience. Passengers will also be able to dine onboard because a restaurant has also been included.

Ministry of Works and Transport said in a statement that the ferry will provide low cost of travel because the government has subsidized it.

With 300 passenger capacity, MV Sigulu is the largest Ferry in Uganda

In addition, MV Sigulu is also seen as an opportunity for boosting tourism in the region, making movement of goods easier and access to social services greatly improved.

The ferry was constructed in collaboration between Danish company, Johs Gram-Hanssen (JGH) and Western Marine Shipyard Limited from Bangladesh.
