With the recent escalation of murders of boda-boda riders across the country, Ngora County Member Of Parliament David Abala yesterday moved a motion urging government to devise means of curbing the rampant murders and robberies on boda boda riders.

In a heated debate as the motion was be discussed, Abala said that before they blame security agencies, Parliament must draft laws that can protect the rights of the boda-boda riders because they (riders) pay taxes and insurance fees.

According to Abala, over five boda-boda cyclists are murdered daily and this is why he is calling upon government to endorse strong regulations for this industry.

“The security of these boda-boda people must be guaranteed just as the security of the Speaker is guaranteed,” Abala said.

Busia Municipality MP Hon Geoffrey Macho said Uganda should follow the Kenyan example of having all boda-boda riders registered under SACCOs. He believes it will guarantee easy identification of the riders.

Kamwenge woman MP Dorothy Nsheiza backed Macho’s suggestion saying fresh registration must be implemented very soon before the situation worsens.

However, opposition Chief whip Hon. Semujju Nganda blamed the government for neglecting the crucial issues by using security agencies to frustrate opponents instead of securing Ugandans.
