Mao says opposition should leave Museveni to contest alone in 2021

Democratic Party (DP) President Norbert Mao believes that Uganda’s democratic trajectory is far from shaping up as the regime is continuing to offer unbalanced playing surface for the opposition.

Mao said the constant brutal acts on opposition leaders by security forces when suppressing opposition rallies or meetings is intolerable.

The DP president urged the forces of change to speak one voice in condemning the acts especially when the country is gearing up for the 2021 general elections. He said if nothing changes, opposition should consider boycotting elections.

“There is no reason for us to participate in a game that does not offer Ugandans an option. Maybe we shall do what the Congolese did to Kabila. They left Kabila alone to contest and thereafter he realised that actually if you are running alone then the all thing is bogus,” Mao said while addressing a presser at the Party headquarters at City House in Kampala.

According to Mao, he has come to understand that elections will never offer solutions to Uganda’s political problems if they continue using the same approach.

“I have always been thinking that we should always participate in elections but I don’t think the problem of Uganda will be solved through elections. I am convinced more than ever that elections will not solve the problem,” he said.

Mao believes that opposition leaders have to think beyond their individual interests.
