High Court in Kampala has ordered government to compensate former Makerere University researcher, Dr Stella Nyanzi Shs50m in damages for violation of her movement rights.

In March, 2017, security operatives intercepted Nyanzi at Entebbe International Airport as she was at immigration clearing to go to Amsterdam for a conference.

Justice Henrietta Wolayo said, “I award the applicant (Dr Nyanzi) Shs50 million as compensation for the violation of her rights to leave the country and the violation for human dignity through degrading treatment but I decline to award aggravated and punitive damages.”

Justice Wolayo also ordered the government to meet 40 percent of Nyanzi’s law suit costs.

Nyanzi who is currently serving her 18 months sentence for harassing President Museveni and insulting his late mother was in 2017 arrested at the Entebbe International airport.

The Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) claimed that she couldn’t travel abroad since they were investigating a case of offensive communication and cyber harassment.
