As most of Uganda’s opposition parties and leaders ponder on how to topple President Yoweri Museveni from the top office, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena believes that taking power has to begin from the grassroots.

During the UPC end of year presser, Akena said the first step to claim power is by trying to weaken the ruling party which is now the National Resistance Movement. He said the opposition must first focus on fielding candidates at lower levels.

“Don’t concentrate on the Presidential seat,” Akena said.

He claimed that if in the coming election the opposition generates lots of MPs in Parliament, then they will have a strong say in the decision making of the country.

Currently, different opposition players are reported to be engaging in closed door meetings in an attempt to decide on whether they can field a single Presidential candidate in the 2021 general elections.
