“Norbert Mao must be in bed with Museveni, he looks like a good leader face-wise but he’s not” – Erias Lukwago

The power struggle within the Democratic Party (DP) would have one questioning whether the party stands for its democratic ideals. There has always been looming mistrust and blame games within the party corridors with the latest being Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago putting party President Norbert Mao on the spotlight.

While appearing on a NTV’s breakfast show this morning, Lukwago accused Mao of being multi-faced with the possibility of him being bed fellows with President Museveni.

“Mao is such a good person, very charming leader but with no DNA for democracy, he is a person who has two faces. If you brought him here, you would see an accomplished leader but behind the scenes, he does the contrary,” Lukwago remarked.

He added that his perception is very clear, that Norbert Mao must be in bed with the President, a statement that could have alluded that Norbert Mao is promoting NRM ideals under the guise of promoting those of DP.

The Lord Mayor said that because Mao came to the party leadership by a coup, he leads and wants to retain power by a coup. “That is why he has been sacking people supposed to organize elections since 2011.”

Lukwago did not aim his canons at the party President alone but the Secretary General, MP Mukasa Mbidde as well. On addressing allegations that Mukasa Mbidde was beaten he said, “MP Mukasa Mbidde was not beaten by anyone, those were just crocodile tears and that was just a tip of the iceberg, a lot is happening and a lot is yet to happen.”

This is not the first time the power struggle causes a stir in the DP top leadership and we can only wait and observe as to how far this will escalate.
