The confirmation of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections in Uganda last month forced President Yoweri Museveni to suspend a number of activities that would escalate the spread of the disease in Uganda, and this halted a lot of activities, including Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA’s) construction projects.
Although the President allowed construction to continue as long as workers follow Ministry of Health’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), KCCA had to break off for three weeks as they work out a safety plan to follow during the construction and rehabilitation projects on Kampala’s roads.
Today, the Authority, through their official social media pages announced that they are resuming work soon along Nakawa-Ntinda, Kulambiro, John Babiiha, Kabuusu-Bunamwaya-Lweza, and Lukuli roads in Kampala.
KCCA said that contractors have been “instructed to screen all workers and to observe COVID-19 Ministry of Health guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures for the safety of workers as well as the communities within the construction corridor.”
As per the President’s directive, all workers shall be housed near each construction site, and are currently settling into their residential camps.
Some of the road works will include casting of culverts for drainage and other related road construction works. All roads are expected to be completed before the end of 2020, furnished with tarmac, road markings, streetlights, signalised junctions, inbuilt drains, road signs, and walkways.
