U-turn: Parliament to pay tribute to Museveni for his exemplary leadership in the fight against COVID-19

A week ago, furious Members of Parliament demanded an apology from President Museveni over his remarks against the institution which they said undermined the powers of legislature.

Museveni said it was morally reprehensible for MPs to allocate themselves Shs10 billion amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before even succeeding in getting the apology, surprisingly, Parliament yesterday made a u-turn as it moved another motion praising Museveni for his exemplary leadership in the fight against the pandemic.

The motion to pay tribute to Museveni was moved by Kole North MP Bonny Okello who said that in spite of the devastating effects of COVID-19 on developed countries like the United States of America, Italy, United Kingdom and others, Uganda has managed with decisive leadership to limit the effects of the deadly virus with no single death.

Several MPs especially from the ruling party NRM supported the motion.

“If you really want to test the quality of leadership that this country has, look at the crises this country has gone through and you can ably see that in all these crises, the President has been tested, tried, and proved capacity and capability to show the way,” Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Ephraim Kamuntu said.

However, opposition MPs disagree with the motion saying that it was too early for Uganda to celebrate coronavirus success when it is yet to find a lasting solution to the ever-increasing positive cases among truck drivers.
