Last month, Parliament passed the Shs304 billion supplementary budget which included Shs10 billion that was shared amongst Members of Parliament. Each MP got Shs20 million to help them fight COVID-19 in their constituencies.

The MPs’ share drew in a lot of criticism from the general public and President Yoweri Museveni termed it as “immoral”, clashing with Speaker Kadaga and some MPs that were defending it.

MPs like Kyadondo East legislator Robert Kyagulanyi among others immediately returned the money while others like Kira Municipality representative Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda said it was not even enough.

Today, Lubaga South MP, Kato Lubwama has also returned sh20 million to the Parliamentary Commission, to hand it over to the District COVID-19 Taskforce.

The legislator, who has been battling sickness that has kept him out of his Parliamentary duties for months, has said that he is “not comfortable having the money on his bank account because he is not aware of its exact source.”

It should be noted that when the money was under contention, Museveni agreed with Kadaga and Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda that MPs should be made members of their respective District COVID-19 taskforces to channel that money into the fight against COVID-19.
