Assistant Inspector of Police (AIGP) Asuman Mugenyi who has been serving as the Director of Operations in the Uganda Police Force force has quit the force today. This marks Mugenyi’s end of 32 years of service in Police having joined in 1988.

Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga refuted earlier claims that Mugenyi was fired, saying that the officer has served out his contract, until Friday, May 29, his last day in office and duly handed over to his deputy, Senior Commissioner of Police (SCP) John Nuwagiira.

It is understood that Mugenyi’s contract was not renewed, and did not wait to be forced out of office as other officers like former Director of Traffic and Road Safety AIGP Steven Kasiima and former Director Logistics and Engineering AIGP Godfrey Bangirana who were forced out of office by IGP Martin Ochola after the expiration of their contracts in February 2020 and November 2019 respectively.

On January 24, 2020, Mugenyi condemned Police brutality by some officers, saying, “You saw the other day, our Police beating up people. I wonder where one gets that! You get a person, you kick, who has not even said ‘you are stupid’, who has not even abused you.

“So officers, I want to really request you that as we go on with our work, we should always remember that at the end of the day, we are accountable to the people, not only those who pay for our uniforms and salaries, but to everyone.”
