President Yoweri Museveni is tomorrow on Wednesday set to declare government’s decision on the reopening of schools for all learners. There has been unresolved mix-up amongst ministry of Education officials, ministry of health and scientists on reopening of schools.

However, yesterday on Monday cabinet presided over by President Museveni met with other stakeholders and concluded on the matter. Their meeting came after a fruitless meeting between the Education and Health officials last week on Thursday where they disagreed on the proposal for full reopening of schools and tertiary institutions hence referring the issue to cabinet.

According to the Daily Monitor, scientists on the Covid-19 national taskforce rejected the ministry of Education proposal to have all learners go back to school.

Nevertheless, the First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports Janet Museveni said that it was risky for government to reopen schools immediately after elections.

“We must be guided in this period of COVID-19 by the President, Ministry of Health and all stakeholders. We could not just open schools after elections as if all is okay without consultations,” Janet said.

Schools have been closed since March 18 last year however Museveni announced partial reopening for only finalists on October 15.
