Known by many for preaching against injustices, the sudden demise of the Kampala diocese Archbishop Dr Cyprian Lwanga has steered up discussions on the role of religious leaders in society.

While appearing on the NBS Frontline where the panelists were weighing in on Dr. Lwanga’s legacy, the Government Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said that the fallen clergy’s contribution towards the Namugongo shrine is overrated.

He backed up his argument by stating that the government of Uganda and other dioceses also played a major role in the Namugongo shrine project.

“I am not disputing Archbishop Lwanga’s achievements.  I am saying he had the advantage of having to lead a predominant ethnicity and presiding where news made,” Ofwono added on.

Ofwono also said that he’s not a believer and has only been to the cathedral to tour.

“I am not a religious person. I am an atheist. I have gone to Lubaga cathedral to tour,” said Ofwono.

He also cautioned religious leaders on mixing religion and politics.

“Once you decide to come into politics, come but please don’t evoke  your collar once we begin to throw punches at ypu. Once we begin to dissect you, don’t say you are a priest.
