Following the premature withdrawal of the Robert Kyagulanyi’s petition , the judiciary has revealed that it spent Shs1.2 billion on the former presidential candidate’s election petition in which he was challenging President Museveni’s January 14 victory.

The Permanent Secretary of the Judiciary, Pius Birgirimana, revealed this yesterday while appearing before the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament. He said the amount was part of the Shs20 billion supplementary budget that he tabled before parliament and was approved.

He said the Shs1.2b helped the judiciary to successfully handle the petition.

However, MPs questioned how the judiciary spent all that money given that the petition ended prematurely in less than two months.

Bigirimana defended saying that though the petition never took off, the judges performed their constitution duties during the application and withdrawal of the petition.

“Remember the case was being handled under tents and other things. We have all the accountability for the money spent,” he said.
