Members of the 11th parliament will on Monday May 24 hold their first sitting where they will vote for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of parliament. The event will be held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

The clerk to parliament is in charge of the affairs of parliament until the speaker is inaugurated. The election and swearing-in of the Speaker of the 11th Parliament will be presided over by the Chief Justice, His Lordship Alphonse Owiny-Dollo, who will then hand-over to the Speaker to preside over the election of the Deputy Speaker.

The battle of who will be the ruling NRM party candidate for the position of the speaker has become scorching as incumbent Rebecca Kadaga and her former Deputy Jacob Oulanyah both submitted their applications to the party Electoral Commission to contest for the top position.
