The 11th Parliament of Uganda will today in its first sitting elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The process will be facilitated by the Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny-Dollo.

On Sunday, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party fronted legislators Jacob Oulanyah and Anita Among as the official party candidates for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 11th Parliament ahead of today’s elections.

However, losers in the NRM primaries Rebecca Kadaga and Thomas Tayembwa have vowed to stand for Speaker and deputy speaker respectively as independents.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) already endorsed Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and Mawokota south MP Yusuf Nsibambi for Speaker and deputy speaker.

Today at 10 am, all the sworn in MPs will make their way to Kololo and take their seats before CJ Owiny Dollo’s arrival.

Owiny Dollo will then read out the rules of the elections of the Speaker according to the Constitution before he calls for nominations of the candidates for the Speaker race.

After members have nominated candidates, voting by secret ballot will commence, votes tallied and the winner declared.

The newly elected Speaker will immediately be sworn in and will be presented with the instruments of power. The CJ will then vacate the seat for the Speaker to take over.

The Speaker will then preside at the election of Deputy Speaker, and the President will administer the oath of Deputy Speaker to the Deputy Speaker-elect.
