Government has indefinitely suspended the operation of 54 Non Governmental Organisations over committing a series of illegalities in the course of their operation.

Okello Stephen, the Executive Director of the National NGO Bureau told journalists that the bureau under the Ministry of Internal Affairs is mandated to register, regulate, monitor, inspect, coordinate and oversee all NGO operations in the country. And once an NGO is found bleaching the laws, they are empowered to halt its operation.

“As a result of our monitoring and investigation functions the NGO Bureau has found that 54 NGOs are non-compliant with the NGO Act 2016,” said Okello.
He explained that 23 NGOs have been operating with expired permits while 15 NGOs have failed to file annual returns and audited books of accounts to the NGO Bureau.
